Undergraduate Research Conference

Hosted by the Honors Programs of Robert Morris University

and California University of Pennsylvania

April 20, 2012

Honors directors and deans are invited to nominate papers or to form panels of three or four papers for a contribution to the conference at Robert Morris University. Those selected to present their research at the conference will have 10 minutes to share their findings or process or method for creating their work.

Papers or creative projects completed independently or within the parameters of a course assignment are suitable for submission. Current and prior work, except that already presented at a previous year’s conference, will be considered. A selection of the top papers will be published in the on-line conference proceedings. Some selected presentations will be videotaped for an online archive.

· Some presentations will be video-conferenced from the conference location.

Nomination of papers or panels must include:

· student's abstract of their presentation

· student's name, year and major

· name and email for the faculty member who is the student’s professor/mentor

· honors director’s name, email and phone number

Global Perspectives

This semester RMU's Honors Program is having Roundtables with the focus on Global Perspectives.

Our first Roundtable event is being held Monday the 14th and will focus on Egypt.

Georges Montillet, an Arabist who has spent time in Egypt and took RMU students there last summer is our first Roundtable speaker of the semester! Prof. Montillet is finishing up his doctorate at Yale and teaches Rhetoric and Arabic at RMU.

David Brooks speaks at RMU

The Pittsburgh Speaker Series presents David Brooks.

David Brooks is a political analyst, commentator, author and New York Times columnist. With humor, insight, and passion he discusses the spirit of our time. Not only is he an observer of the American lifestyle, but he also analyzes current politics and foreign affairs. He has had many appearances on the News Hour with Jim Lehrer and NPR's All Things Considered.

The speech will be given Wednesday April 7, 2010 in the Rogal Chapel on Robert Morris University's campus. The Doors will open at 1:00pm and the program will start at 1:30pm.

Carmen Opera

Honors Students from CCAC, Duquesne, Point Park, and Robert Morris are getting together to experience the Opera Carmen. The performance will be on March 23 at the Benedum Center in Pittsburgh. Before the show there will be a preview of the Opera, and following the performance there will be a meet and greet with the artists.

RMU Presents Rooney Scholar, Francis Kee Burnside

Please join us Friday, January 29, 2010, for the first presentation by the Spring 2010 Rooney Scholar, Francis Kee Burnside, as he shares with our campus community the ethical system of life known as the “Blessing Way.”A reception will take place at 11:45am, and the presentation will start at 12 noon in the Rogal Family Chapel.

As the 18th Rooney Visiting Scholar, Francis will discuss the history
and philosophy of the Dine (Navajo nation) from the perspective of his
role as a traditional healer and a modern agent of the Navajo
Peacemaking Court. Burnside, a hataalii and certified Navajo Nation
Peacemaker, will share the ceremonial ways of the Dine as he brings
tradition and modernity together.

Please notice that seating will be limited for this event
and an RSVP is required — especially if you are bringing a large group to the event (e.g., an entire office or class). Please contact Terri
Byrnes at byrnes@rmu.edu to RSVP as soon as possible but no

Pink Feet Celebration

Julie Philp from Susan G. Komen will be coming to Point Park University on Thursday January 21, 2010 for a Pink Feet Celebration and Check Presentation. Honors Students will be gathering for food and fun. The money raised from selling Pink Feet last semester will be presented to Julie Philp at the event.

The Honors Programs of California University of Pennsylvania and Robert Morris University are proud to host the Intersections Undergraduate Research Conference, which will highlight the various intersections between disciplines, research, and methodologies.

This year’s conference will be held at Robert Morris University with video-conference uplinks to some participating institutions. All undergraduates at area institutions are invited to submit their papers and creative projects for inclusion in the conference. Current and prior work, except that already presented at a previous year’s conference, is suitable for submission. Those selected to present their research at the conference will have 10 minutes to share their findings, process or method for creating their work. A selection of the top papers will be published in the on-line conference proceedings.

Individual papers, or a panel of three or four papers related to a theme, may be submitted. All students invited to present their research must be registered and able to attend the conference. Students should feel free to submit papers or creative projects completed independently or within the parameters of a course assignment. Multiple submissions are encouraged; however students should take care to submit their best work to date. Students might also wish to submit research papers which explore a topic, issue, or position, in order to draw conclusions, make suggestions, or propose hypotheses.

• To be considered for a conference presentation, please send an abstract or paper to honors@rmu.edu by midnight of March 16, 2010.

For more than four decades, explorer, environmentalist, educator, and film producer Jean-Michel Cousteau has used his vast experience to communicate to people of all nations and generations his love and concern for our water planet.

Since being thrown overboard from the Calypso at age 7 by his father, Jacques, this explorer, environmentalist, educator and documentary film producer has communicated his love and concern for our “water planet.” Today, as president of Ocean Futures Society, he travels extensively; teaching, exploring and producing films to reach millions the world over.

Ralph Nader at Point Park

Ralph Nader will be speaking on Monday, October 19th from 6-7pm in the GRW, which is located on 414 Wood Street, 15222. We are encouraging all of our students to register online, because seating is becoming very limited. You can do this through our Web site: www.pointpark.edu/ces. It is a brief registration and students can choose 'external guest.'

It might be possible to save a section of seats for honors students from all of the schools. The doors open sometime around 5pm. Afterwards, everyone could perhaps get together for a half hour or so to chat about our perspectives of Nader's lecture.

Kissinger - O'Neill Event at Heinz Hall

On Monday, October 5 at 7:30 students from the Consortium will convene at Heinz Hall for an evening of great conversation on international relations, healthcare, the economy, and a chance to get to know ‘the other side’ of Henry Kissinger, as told through his dialog with Paul O’Neill. The program will include opportunities for social interaction and questions from the audience. Tickets have been distributed. See everyone there!
